I’m not sure why my snake plant has been looking so sad lately.

I’ve tried everything to make it happy: watering it, feeding it, and even giving it a haircut.

I really don’t know what’s wrong with him. But then one day as I was walking through the garden center…

.…when all of a sudden this guy comes up to me and starts talking about snake plants!

He told me that they need fertilizer in order to grow healthy and strong.

So now every time I go home from work, I fertilize my friend the snake plant before he goes dark for the night.

And after 5 months having this plant with regularly putting fertilizer on it, it grow so big.

It is usually best to fertilize your snake plant with an all-purpose plant food during warm weather. This is the time when it needs the extra nutrients the most. You can eliminate the fertilizer completely in the winter and fall because snake plants don’t need the extra nutrients in cold weather.

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are considered three major macronutrients required by all plants.

The nitrogen element is important for overall greenness, the phosphorus element is critical for roots…

How can you put all these nutrients into a snake plant’s soil?

You have to water your snake plant every time, which takes up water and nutrients through its roots…

….to be used by the plant, thus slowly depleting the nutrient levels in the soil.

Without fertilization, your plant would eventually run out of nutrients manifested in yellowing, off-colored leaves, etc.

Snake plants would all take years to show these signs of nutrient deficiency, so if you notice a yellow leaf…

…you should consider if it was caused by nutrient deficiency or something else before assuming it just lacks fertilizer. 

Occasionally, snake plant leaves will turn yellow once in a while when they’re old or overwatering…

….can cause the leaves to turn yellow. Snake plants are particularly toxin-filled if they’re overwatered.

Just be sure any yellow leaves are not being caused by an other factor before you assume…

…the plant needs more fertilizer and nutrients in its soil, as this type of thinking could cause you more problems than you need.

 Despite popular belief, there’s not a certain time of year or strict schedule to follow with fertilizing your snake plant.  It is dependent on how much sun your snake plant is receiving which will determine how often it should be fertilized.  Here are some general guidelines you can refer to:

• High light = Fertilize every 3 months
• Medium light = fertilize twice a year
• Low light = fertilize once a year

When you fertilize your snake plant more often than the recommended guidelines, you run the risk of overloading…

….it with nutrients and causing nutrient toxicity or fertilizer burn.

This will show up as crisp edges on leaves, or sudden yellowing of leaves.

It happens because a plant living in high light will gather lots of energy and take up nutrients quickly…

…in order to maintain all the energy it has to provide. A plant in low light is not taking up nutrients very fast…

….and therefore will not need to be fertilized very often. Snake plants are rather slow growing…

…and often advertised as plants that do well in low light so you shouldn’t need to be fertilizing all that often.

If you’re still not sure and doubt your ability to know how much light your snake plant is getting….

…go on the more conservative side and only do it once a year. 

Snake plants are definitely one of those indoor plants that don’t require heavy fertilizing.

Last but not least..

Now that you know the basics of how fertilization works, its benefits, and how often you should be doing it…

….you’re ready to fertilize! Let’s take a look at the following statements in order to ensure that the snake plant…

…is actually ready to be fertilized. There’s some condition that you need to aware of:

• My snake plant is in good health & has no underlying conditions
• I am not fertilizing to fix my snake plant’s problems

    This is one of the reasons I want you to check off those boxes, because I have seen people use fertilizer…

….as a sort of “Hail Mary” to fix their plants’ problems and get them back into the perfect shape…

…they think their plant should be in. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.

When your snake plant is already stressed and struggling with something else like poor watering practices…

…pests, sun scorch, etc., then fertilizing it may end up only increasing its stress, sometimes even pushing it…

…over the edge and causing it to die.

When your snake plant is in good health and not struggling with any outside factors, it will be fine.

So here’s the way you do it step by step:

• Gathering supplies
• Mix water and fertilizer
• Drench soil
• Sign of over fertilization
