4 Super Guides to Choose Good Potting for Jade Plant (2021)

Jade is the cool houseplant and easy to care with it. Cause we don’t need…

to water it regularly like other houseplants. Jade is a succulent plant…

…that can live in extreme condition and environment that is lack of water source

But it will become troublesome if you don’t know about that.

When potted jade plants are planted in the wrong type of potting soil…

…over-watering is the biggest threat.

For more information on how to prevent jade from being over-watered visit this post.

Here’s the story from Yaka about his experience choosing pot for his jade…

Let us hear Yaka’s story…

It has been 1 year. That my girl give me a Jade. It’s so good to have it

And now its growing so big but there’s some problem that comes…

I need a good potting method, that I can applied for my jade. Cause it’s growing bigger…

and bigger every time I have research. All day long and finally I found the good guide

For potting from allthingsgardener.com. It’s so relief now my jade can grow…

even more big over than a year!

The Fact

Moist and water retentive commercial potting mixes, usually are bad for a succulent such as a jade plant’s roots.

There is a risk of developing “wet feet” if the soil retains too much moisture…

….which can cause fungus diseases and root rot resulting in the wilting of the stems…

…and leaves and the formation of circular black marks on the leaves.

But it is an entirely different plant thanks to its tropical characteristics which distinguishes it…

…from desert cacti even though cacti represent. a distant relative of the jade plant.

Be sure that  the jade plant is given enough water and its soil must remain slightly moist at all times…

…in order to stay healthy and avoid becoming shrivelled by dehydration and overwatered.

Due to this, the ideal solution is to use a suitable soil that retains just the right amount of moisture…

…for a tropical succulent.

To keep in mind…

There are several things you need to take into deep when choosing a pot for a jade plant.

First of all, this plant can have thick woody stems and plump voluminous leaves.

It is a slow-growing plant, but it becomes top-heavy once it emerges new shoots and leaves…

…and its stems become thicker with growth.

Additionally, the plant cannot tolerate wet feet or water accumulating at the base of the pot…

…so it is extremely important to provide a pot with adequate drainage….

….to prevent this condition which can lead to root rot.

Because of these factors the jade plant does best in a pot that provide maximum drainage…

…and a wide sturdy base to support the weight of the plant as it produces new stems and leaves over time.

Choosing the Pot

In order to grow jade plants successfully not only must they be planted…

…in the correct pot but they have to be planted in the proper medium.

This planting medium includes a variety of coarse components, including ground bark and pumice, which increase aeration and keep the jade from developing root rot.”

John Young, environmental engineering and Florida master gardener.

Jade is happiest in dry conditions and thrives on benign neglect;

so you may want to place  a few pebbles in the bottom and ensure the medium…

…is well-draining for example by stirring some coarse-grained san…

…broken walnut, or pecan shells ground bark, or pumice, into standard potting soil.

Terra Cotta Pot

No pot is more classic or as forgiving of occasional overwatering…

…as good old terracotta. Let’s discuss the pot.

Choose terra cotta or clay pots for jade because they are porous and will dry faster than plastic or glazed ceramic.

Generally, one way of killing houseplants is by overwatering but fast-drying clay pots can lessen this occurrence.

Your plants will be grateful for your thoughtfulness a sentiment they will express by not dying.

So what’s the point?

They allow some air to pass through the sides which is good for jade plants…

…which need the soil to dry pretty well between watering.

Having drainage holes in the pot is even more important than the material in which the pot is made.

These allow water to drain from the pot’s bottom when watered.

Also, it allows you to moisten all the roots when you water enough to get a good run-off from the holes

Orchid Pot

The small openings in Orchid pots make them fast-draining well-aerated

…and also suitable for Jade itself.

The pots for orchids are rather like small strawberries pots have very open tops and are very attractive if you live somewhere…

….where it tends to be very humid or rainy most of the time you may want to use a hanging basket.

Size does matter!

It is also important to consider the size of the pot when buying a new plant.

Good pot will boost the potting result.

Let the plant settle in its new home and you won’t have to worry about repotting for at least six months…

…a year is even better.

Except you receive the plant in some kind of dish garden where it lacks drainage holes….

….and may be mixed with other plants in which case you should repot immediately.

Interesting right?

The size for the potting you use should be only a little larger than the diameter of the plant.

So if your new plant was about 4 inch in diameter a 5 inch pot would be sufficient for about a year or two.

Once this time has passed and you buy a new pot it should be no larger…

…than the original one you don’t want to overestimate the pot size of your plant.

Go on…

Don’t Use Glass Pot for Potting

Why? There are some problems associated with glass containers. If you used it for potting!

First, if there’s no hole in the bottom water can collect in the bottom and rot the roots.

The white crust is from fertilizer salt that’s not a big deal, but it does indicate…

…that the excess nutrients haven’t been flushed out of the root ball.

Too much water around succulents’ roots will kill them.

Second, the stem and root system have little air circulation.

Third, if the plant is getting enough sunlight, it will generate heat behind the glass.

Succulents can take a lot of heat up.

But if its too much, the jade can be sunburned.

You should give the plant at least 5 hours of direct sun each day after potting it up.

Keep going…

To prevent sunscald, gradually expose the plant to more sun over a week’s time should it be less exposed to sunlight.

This is especially important if you’re growing it outside.

As sunlight increases the internodes the length of the stem between the nodes where leaves are attached…

….on new growth will be closer together making the plant look denser.

The plant prefers lots of direct sunlight, fast-draining soil, and an environment where it does not need to be watered…

…frequently.

Keep the plant above 50 degrees F in the winter and up to 90 degrees F in the summer.

Keep it dry in the winter.

Tips

Given these factors a jade plant requires a ceramic pot or a sturdy plastic pot with good drainage…

…to prevent the soil and roots from becoming too soggy.

As long as you have a free draining mix either pot will keep your jade happy and healthy.

Sum Up

As a succulent, a Jade needs excellent drainage and the pores in the clay pot….

facilitate this. Wait until the plant is very dry before watering.

Be sure to thoroughly saturate it when you water.

If you want your Jade to grow well you need to fertilize it constantly with a very dilute solution.

If you live in an arid part of the country your plant will be very happy.

The more humid an area is the lower the humidity will be.

However, larger trees are more vulnerable to rotting if they are not tended properly such as watering too much…

….or using a soiled mix which must drain quickly.

There’s no need to do it perfectly if you are living in arid regions.

Conclusion

Last thing for sure.

This plant need to be care carefully, especially for potting.

This potting method was crucial because this kind of plant needs to have good drainage…

…to prevent an overwatered situation, that can cause many problems.

From dropping leaves until rotting rot. Alright that’s all for today!
