Don’t Ever Leave Your Snake Plant Covering Dust
Why bother holding soil off plants’ leaves when they grow in it? Anyone who has been away for more…
….than two weeks knows how quickly dust accumulates. A coating of dust on houseplant leaves blocks sunlight…
…reducing the plant’s ability to photosynthesize. The plant feeds itself by photosynthesis.
Cleaning snake plant on a regular basis really saves you time in the long run.
It will also improve the appearance of your house. Here we have story from Jack’s story about his experience…
…cleaning his snake plant from heavy dirt!
Let us hear Jack’s story
After a long day of work, I came home to find that my snake plant was growing out of its pot.
I could tell that the dirt had been too dry for some time and it needed to be removed so the roots would have more space.
I filled up a bowl full of water, grabbed a cup, pulled off one side of the sponge and put the other in with water.
I then took down my plants from their hanging baskets and set them on top of newspaper…
…where they were so that my floor wouldn’t get dirty while working on them.
One by one, starting at the left-most plant (since that’s how you read when looking at them)…
…I used the sides of each piece to scrape away as much dirt that contain in that leaves.
After 2 hours of wiping and cleaning, finally this snake plant back to his original appearance.
A clean plant that’s photosynthesizing at optimal levels will be a healthier plant and healthy plants don’t get diseases and pest infestations. So periodically cleaning the leaves of your houseplants actually makes less work for you in the long run—and it will make your houseplants and home look better.

Here’s the main thing
Why You Want to Clean Your Snake Plant
That’s incorrect. Inside, plants grow in clay. They are exposed to the elements, such as wind, rain, and animals…
….in these areas. Plants that are grown indoors in soil and plants that are grown outdoors…
…are two entirely different things. Since indoor plants are never given the opportunity to obtain a safe bath…
…of rainwater dripping from their leaves. Alternatively, they will whip back and forth in a gust of wind…
….sending debris flying off their leaves. Alternatively, have birds, squirrels, or bees land on the plants’ leaves…
….shaking off dirt and dust as they ascend. Nope. Indoor plants don’t have any of those natural means…
..of keeping themselves clean. That’s why, as a plant mom or dad, it’s important that you clean houseplants for them.
Cleaning Snake Plant That Needed For These Two Reason:
Dirty Leaves Can Kill a Plant
Dirt and dust don’t just sit on top of the leaves and have no impact.
Instead, certain microscopic particles clog the plant’s pores.
This is a challenge since sunlight enters a plant through its pores. Photosynthesis is how your houseplant…
…gets its energy from the sun. As a result, less sun equals less food and your houseplants are battling it out every day.
Dirty Plants Reduce Air Purifying
You probably have a houseplant in your home because of its natural air purifying properties.
So you don’t want to reduce your home’s air purification. Dust and debris will clog an indoor plant’s pores…
….preventing it from receiving sunlight. This also ensures that there is less air flow into the plant’s pores.
Heat movement through the plant’s leaves is one of the ways houseplants disinfect indoor air.
Go on…
Frequency
That is highly dependent on the amount of dust in the air. Houseplants in areas with gravel roads, buildings…
….or a lot of wind will need to be cleaned more frequently. Rub your fingertips on the leaves of a plant to see…
…if it needs to be cleaned. It’s time to clean if you can feel or see more dust than you can blow off the leaves.
Instructions
When it comes to cleaning your houseplants, there are many options available.
The following are some of the possibilities:
Spray
Moving houseplants to the kitchen sink or tub and hosing them down is the best way to clean them.
Until spraying, check to see if the water is lukewarm.
The leaves of the plant can be damaged by both hot and cold water.
If your plants are particularly filthy, spray them with a dilute soapy water mixture before rinsing them.
For every quart of water, use around 1/4 tablespoon dish soap. Small plants that are unable to withstand…
…the force of a spray can be washed by keeping the plant’s base at soil level, inverting it into a bucket of water…
….and swishing the leaves around. Watering the soil before inverting the pot will help keep the soil from dropping out.
Wrap plastic wrap around the plant’s base to keep the soil contained when washing. Always use lukewarm water.
Allow the plants to drip dry before relocating them.
Wipe Leaves
You may easily clean the leaves off of plants that are too big to pass with a damp cloth.
You can help prevent dust from piling up on the leaves after the initial cleaning by dusting them…
…with a soft duster whenever you dust your home. You’ll want to scrub down the plant’s leaves individually..
…if they can’t be moved to a kitchen sink or a tub. This is also how I clean my houseplants, which have dense…
….durable single leaves that are easy to wipe down. For example, wiping down the leaves of a Snake Plant…
….is easier for me than attempting to hose it down. I can do it in one swipe because there aren’t too many leaves.
However, wiping down the leaves of a ZZ plant will take an eternity..
..because each stem has so many different little leaves on it.
- Wipe the leaves down with a damp towel. It might be a reusable cloth or a disposable paper towel. You might also use a dusting glove to make it easier to hold each plant leaf.
- Hold the leaf in one hand for support while wiping it down with the other.
- If you wish to speed up the process, sprinkle the plant with a small mist of water first. Simply moisten all of the leaves of the plant. After that, wipe everything down with a rag.
Spray your plants with a solution of water and one or two drops of dish soap for added cleaning power.
This will help break down grease, filth, and caked-on dirt more quickly. You must, however, make certain to remove…
…all of the water from the plant’s leaves, ensuring that no soap residue remains.

Brush Softly
Some plants have sticky or fuzzy leaves that just don’t lend themselves to easy cleaning.
And in the case of plants such as African violets that don’t like getting their leaves wet, neither spraying or wiping…
…is the answer. For fuzzy-leaved plants, use a soft brush such as a mushroom brush..
..to very gently coax the dust from the leaves.
Sticky or Fuzzy Leaves
These plants just don’t like it when their leaves get wet, or wetting them doesn’t make much of a difference…
…in terms of dust removal. A good example of this sort of plant is the African violet.
You’ll want to gently brush away the dust and dirt in this situation:
- Dust off the particles on each plant’s leaves with a little paintbrush. Yes, it is time consuming and tedious. But your plant will appreciate it!
- A cotton swab can also be used to gently remove dust and debris. Especially in the spaces between the leaves of any houseplant. Cotton swabs are ideal for cleaning delicate leaves like those on succulents.
Consider utilizing compressed air to clean plants with difficult-to-clean foliage, such as cactus.
A powerful blast of air can readily clear dust from prickly plants without injuring you!
Last but not least…
Trim
It’s simple to tidy up plants by removing their dead, brown, or yellowing leaves when they’re being washed.
Pick the leaf by hand if it comes loose quickly. Otherwise, scissors should be used.
Never pull a plant’s resistant leaves, and only prune browned leaf tips from plants that have been left too dry.
When cutting the leaves, follow the natural contour of the leaves for a more natural look.
