GIFTS YOU CAN GIVE AS GIFTS

Sharing your love of plants by giving plants to others is a great way to share your passion for plants, and give a gift that will be enjoyed for many years to come. I will show you how to gift potted plants, share a list of plants that make good gifts, and give you tons of potted plant gift ideas.

Gifting plants is a great way to express appreciation for a special occasion, or simply to say thank you. The list of gifts available goes on and on, whether you want to give plants for Christmas presents, homewarming gifts, Mother’s Day presents, or even fun party favors.

It’s great to give plants as gifts, and they are thoughtful and fun. Live plants make people happy, are useful around the house, are healthy, and warm up a room.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE PERFECT GIFT PLANT

The beauty of plants, especially live ones, makes them great presents to give to people of varying gardening skills and preferences. Therefore, before you decide to give a plant as a gift, do a little research first so you’re sure it’s the right kind of gift to give…

  • Does your friend have an allergy to flowers? Hence, succulents are better given as gifts than flowering plants.
  • Is your neighbor a pet owner? Please make sure the plant you are giving is not poisonous to the type of pet they have.
  • Are you sick of hearing about the color purple (or any other color)? Therefore, do not give plants with purple flowers (or whatever color they do not like).

The main thing to keep in mind is that you want to convey your thoughtfulness by choosing the best plant for giving, not frustrate the receiver! After you’ve done your research and feel that a plant is a wonderful gift, you need to decide which plant you’re going to give.

THE BEST PLANTS TO GIVE AS GIFTS

Plants make a great gift for any occasion and can be given to anyone. However, what is a good plant to give as a gift? Perennials make good gifts, but it can be difficult to determine exactly which ones will work well in someone’s garden.

A gift of herbs can also be a good gift, but unless your friend wishes to grow them indoors in the winter, it may not last. The best potted plants to give as presents are houseplants, in my opinion. Gift plants that can be easily cared for, and that will survive anywhere, unless the recipient has experience growing indoor plants.

The best indoor plants to give as gifts include pathos, spider plants, dieffenbachia, peperomia, arrowhead vine, cast iron plants, corn plants, snake plants, Chinese evergreens, succulents and zz plants.

GIVING A PLANT AS A GIFT

If your plant is tiny, dormant, or cascading and tall it may flower or be dormant. It is important to take into consideration the pot size and plant height when wrapping plants. It is possible to tuck a small plant inside a gift bag, or even wrap it in a box (if you are incredibly careful when handling it). But it is not the case with larger plants.

So whether I am giving a large or small plant as a gift, I prefer leaving the plant in the spotlight from the get-go instead of hiding it. Making it look extra special may only require tying on a ribbon or bow. The pot can also be decorated or wrapped to add a bit of flair.

GIVING A PLANT AS A GIFT

You may have a tiny plant or a large one, one that flower or dies, one that cascades or one that is tall. It is important to take into consideration the pot size and plant height when wrapping plants. It is possible to tuck a small plant inside a gift bag, or even wrap it in a box (if you are incredibly careful when handling it). But it is not the case with larger plants.

I always give plants as gifts, and I like to let them be the focus of the show from the beginning rather than cover them up. You can make it unique by adding a decorative bow or ribbon, or by decorating or wrapping it.

Make sure the holiday or occasion matches the material you choose. Here are some ideas for how to decorate your plants for gifts…

  • Colorful ribbon

INSPIRATION FOR CREATING ADORABLE DIY PLANT GIFTS

Let your creativity and imagination run wild as you recreate the looks that I made, but please don’t let mine override yours. You can customize them however you want to make them special to your loved ones! Below I created four different looks to give you some inspiration….

  1. Christmas Succulents gift plant
  2. Thank You gift of indoor plants
  3. Peek-A-Boo potted plant gifts
  4. Traditional Surprise plant gift bags

IDEA 1: CHRISTMAS SUCCULENTS GIFT PLANT

My favorite Christmas gift is houseplants. It may seem like a simple gift, but plants are always a huge hit when I give them to my family and friends! Giving them a plant is a wonderful gift for sharing my love of plants and giving them a unique gift.

Plants such as succulents make great Christmas presents. Everyone loves succulents! This year, for the holidays, I chose to gift an assortment of succulent plants to a close family friend. I kept it simple by wrapping a festive bow around the cute planter since it is so cute.

Supplies Needed For Christmas Succulents

  • Pre-made succulent gardens or a mix of succulent plants
  • These decorative rocks (I place them on top of the soil to dress up this gift even more)
  • Wooden planter (or decorative pot of your choice)
  • Holiday ribbon
  • Gift bow
  • Gift wrapping tape

Steps To Recreate Christmas Succulents

  • Step 1: Put your succulent plants in the decorative pot, or simply drop them into the pre-made succulent garden.
  • Step 2 (optional): Add some decorative rock to the top of the soil for some extra character.
  • Step 3: Put ribbon around the pot, making sure to bring the ends of the ribbon together where the bow will be placed so you can hide the seam. Use clear tape to hold the ribbon in place.
  • Step 4: Cover the ribbon’s ends with a bow of your choice and the ribbon’s ends.

IDEA 2: THANK YOU GIFT OF INDOOR PLANTS

I love giving plants as gifts, especially to friends and family who have been incredibly helpful to me. In this particular pot, I’m giving it to someone who has been incredibly helpful to me.

This gift is super easy, and I love choosing the decorative planters as part of the gift. I used colorful washi tape to attach a thank you card onto the pot, then placed the plant into the decorative pot. It’s easy and adorable!

Supplies Needed For Thank You Garden

  • Mix of succulent plants or a pre-made succulent garden
  • Decorative rocks (optional – used to cover the soil and dress it up a bit more)
  • Square planter
  • Fun, colorful washi tape
  • Thank you card

Steps To Recreate Thank You Garden

  • Step 1: Place your succulent plants in a pot of your choice or, if you prefer, buy a succulent garden pre-made.
  • Step 2: Decorative rocks may be used as a covering for the soil.
  • Step 3: Write in your thank you card what you are grateful for. Seal the envelope and write thank you on the envelope.
  • Step 4: Attach two small pieces of colorful washi tape on the corners of the planter with the thank you card on the front.

IDEA 3: PEEK-A-BOO POTTED PLANT GIFTS

I find this is the closest thing to wrapping plants as a gift without covering them, so I often give them as a gift in this manner. You can do this for any occasion! This method works especially well if you are giving away plants that are not in decorative containers.

If the pot you use has drainage holes, then I would recommend either putting a plastic drip tray under the pot before wrapping it, or dropping the pot into a decorative cache container. By doing this, moisture will not come in through the draining holes and ruin your wrapping paper, or stain the fabric.

Supplies Needed For Peek-A-Boo Plant Gifts

  • Plant of your choice
  • Planter (can be decorative or not)
  • You could also wrap the plant in foil if you don’t want it to leak water.
  • Decorative twine

Steps To Recreate Peek-A-Boo Plant Gifts

  • Step 1: Put your plant in a decorative pot of your choice, or place a drip tray beneath it.
  • Step 2: Stagger the corners of your tissue paper or fabric so they form a diamond pattern, as I did.
  • Step 3: Place the pot on the tissue paper or fabric with one corner facing the front of the pot.
  • Step 4: Gently gather the tissue paper/fabric to cover the pot, then tie it in place by wrapping a piece of decorative twine all the way around the pot and securing it in place. For this step, you may want to have someone help you. One person to hold the tissue paper/fabric in place while the other ties the twine.

IDEA 4: TRADITIONAL SURPRISE PLANT GIFTS

My ideas so far have all been cute ways to wrap potted plants without a sense of mystery. If you prefer surprises until you open a gift, then this one is for you! Who doesn’t like a traditional surprise?

Just remember to buy a gift bag that’s big enough for the plant’s pot AND its height when you choose a gift bag. In order to personalize this idea, I painted a classic terracotta pot, making it even more special.

Supplies Needed For Traditional Surprise Plant Bags

  • Plant of your choice (or decorate one!)
  • Decorative pot
  • A planter bag that is large enough for your pot and plants
  • Tissue paper

Steps To Recreate Traditional Surprise Gift Plant

  • Step 1: Place your plant in the pot of your choice.
  • Step 2: Place the potted plant carefully into the gift bag so it stands upright on the bottom of the bag.
  • Step 3: Fluff up various pieces of tissue paper with your hands and add them loosely into the bag to cover the plant.

Plants can make a wonderful gift for sharing friends or family, or for adding some green in someone’s life. I enjoy giving plants as gifts because of the look you get when you give them away. It’s true that plants are thought-provoking, classy, and beautiful, and they’re the true gift that keeps giving!
