I Don’t Have Spots That Receive Enough Lights
That’s not a big problem. You can grow houseplants without a window with only artificial light! Well, they can’t exactly grow in the dark. You can’t just put any plant wherever you want it to grow and expect it to flourish. If you pick the wrong one for the job, it will stagnate and die slowly. However, continue reading.
Best Plants That Grow In The Dark
Even if you don’t have a window in your office or room, there are a few choices. With no windows and only fluorescent ceiling lights, I have personally established a following.
Lucky Bamboo
In containers filled with water and pebbles, they generally grow slowly but they can grow in the dark. Simply maintain the pot filled with water and you should be fine for quite some time. The best water is distilled water (room temperature). You can use tap water, which is what I use the most of the time, but you will eventually develop hard water deposits, which will begin to pile up and perhaps injure the roots. On the bamboo canes, the inside of the pot, and the surface of the pebbles, you’ll notice a white crust forming. When this happens, gently scrape it off.
Parlor Palm
In my experience, the Parlor Palm is the easiest palm to grow in the dark. It grows slowly, but it can reach a good size after several years. As a general rule, for most plants, make sure the pot has sufficient drainage and water when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch. Whatever you do, avoid exposing your palm to moisture extremes. Never, ever, ever let it dry fully. If you do so, it will swiftly devolve into shambles. Parlor Palms may bloom for you if you’re lucky, but it’s unlikely in a windowless environment.
Devil’s Ivy Or Pothos
Pothos is one of the most simple houseplants to grow in the dark. Allowing this plant to become bone dry can cause the bottom leaves to yellow and fall off. You’ll have a monster vine in no time if you pay attention to correct watering. It’s all about finding the perfect plant for the right spot. It doesn’t work the other way around.
Peace Lily
Peace lilies can be found in abundance and for good cause. They make fantastic grow in the dark plants, and only a few plants can flourish in the conditions that these plants can. Follow the same watering instructions as devil’s ivy. Peace lilies dislike it when their soil is completely dry. Their leaves will begin to droop if they are let to dry out too much. If you see this, water it right away and it will liven up again! This plant comes in a variety of leaf sizes, as well as large leaf sizes. You will also be rewarded with flowers if you take good care of it. Some of them even have a mild fragrance to them.
Wrap Things Up
So keep in mind that all plants will thrive with greater light, but it is feasible to grow plants in a windowless location if you choose the proper ones!
